Uxmal is an ancient Mayan city located 38 miles south of Merida, the capital city of the state of Yucatan, Mexique. A UNESCO Site du patrimoine mondial, it contains one of the most important archeological sites of the Mayans, including the Pyramid of the Magician and the House of the Doves. It is a popular tourist destination with hotels and a museum within walking distance to the site.
Tulum is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya city. It is a walled city on the cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexique. Sian Ka’an is a biosphere reserve in the town of Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexique. It became a UNESCO Site du patrimoine mondial dans 1987. Part of the reserve is on land and part is in the Caribbean Sea, including a section of coral reef. The reserve offers protection for the endangered species in the Riviera Maya and provides environmental education to the local communities to assist and train the residents working with ecotourism.
San Cristobal de las Casas is located in the central highlands of Chapas, Mexique. It has been designated a “Pueblo Magico” (Magical Village) dans 2003 and is considered the cultural capital of Chapas. The city attracts tourists with its native populations and numerous festivals and charming cobblestone streets. A large number of tourists have settled in San Cristobal which has expanded the local culture and added Italian, French, Thai, Indian and Chinese restaurants.
Cenote Dos Ojos is a flooded cave system located north of Tulum on the Caribbean Coast on the Yucatan Peninsula Quintana Roo, Mexique. It is known officially as Sistema Dos Ojos. Cenotes is the local name for the sinkhole entrances. The cave system encompases 51 miles and is still being explored. The name Dos Ojos refers to two large cenotes that resemble two large eyes into the underground.

San Francisco de Campeche, also known as just “Campeche” is located in the state of Campeche, Mexique, on the Bay of Campeche of the Gulf of Mexique. Campeche serves as the Capital of the state of Campeche and has a population of over 200,000 people. The city has earned the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its preservation and the quality of the architecture. The city has retained most of the wall fortifications built to defend it from the pirates of the Carribbean.
Calakmul is located in the state of Campeche in southeastern Mexico about 22 miles au nord de la frontière guatémaltèque. Cuzama Celestun is a town located in the northwest corner of Yucatan State, Mexique, on the Gulf of Mexico coast. The town is part of Celestun Biosphere Reserve which is a wetland reserve that is the migratory home for flocks of flamingos, herons and more than 200 other bird species that pass through or reside permanently there. It is also refuge for endangered sea turtle hatchlings. Celestun is popular for its beaches and abundant wildlife.

In 1521, the Spanish Empire conquered and colonized the territory from its base in Mexico-Tenochtitlan. This territory would eventually become Mexico following recognition of the colony’s independence in 1821.
With independence came economic instability and several armed conflicts, including the Mexican-American War that led to the territorial cession to the United States, the Pastry War, the Franco-Mexican War, a civil war, two empires and a domestic dictatorship. The latter led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910, which inspired the 1917 Constitution and the country’s current political system.
In March 1938, through the Mexican oil expropriation private U.S. and Anglo-Dutch oil companies were nationalized to create the state-owned Pemex oil company. Mexico was the first Latin American member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD (since 1994), and considered an upper-middle income country by the World Bank. Mexico currently has membership in prominent institutions such as the UN, the WTO, the G20 and the Uniting for Consensus.
Mexico is now one of the world’s largest economies, which is strongly linked to those of its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, especially the United States. Mexico is the tenth largest oil producer, and the largest silver producer in the world. Mexico is generally considered a newly industrialized country a regional power and an emerging world power.
According to Goldman Sachs, par 2050 Mexico is expected to become the world’s fifth largest economy. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) estimated in January 2013 that by 2050 Mexico could be the world’s seventh largest economy.
