From Mexico City you travel northwest to the “Pearl of the West,” the mariachi capital of Guadalajara, then farther north and west to fabulous Mazatlán, the “Pearl of the Pacific,” watched over by El Faro, the world’s highest lighthouse. Then you leave Mexico’s Gold Coast, traveling by ferry to the magnificent Baja Peninsula, where you will explore the beautiful stretch of land from bottom to top, starting with the lively party town of Cabo San Lucas. Taking in the artist colony of Todos Santos and of course the unforgettable Arch at Land’s End, a great spot for snorkeling, seal spotting or just gazing in wonder at the spectacular sunset. As you head north you may enjoy sea kayaking around Isla Espíritu Santo, an uninhabited gem in the Gulf of California. Perhaps you will want to meander the tree-lined, cobblestone streets of aptly named La Paz (“Peace”), pondering the next step in your journey. Enjoying the sport fishing mecca of Loreto or combing the vast beaches of Bahia Concepcion on the Sea of Cortez.
You will be refreshed after resting in the lush oasis of San Ignacio and will be ready to plunge into the desert world of the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve pondering the mysterious prehistoric rock paintings of Sierra de San Francisco, left for us, as the story goes, by a long-lost race of giants. You will see more sea lions not to mention elephant seals and magnificent gray whales at the UNESCO World Heritage marine refuge of Laguna Ojo de Liebre. As we explore further you will find the breathtaking sight of Mexico’s most exquisite bay, the Bahia de Los Angeles, a wonderful locale for fishing, sunning, or snorkeling among the sea lions. Our adventure then takes us through the Baja’s rugged Central Desert, with its own enchanted forests of cirio cactus spires. You’ll soon be camping among dramatic rock formations and enchanted pine forests in the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park. As we continue north, you can enjoy wine tastings at world-class wineries in the Valley of Guadalupe. The birthplace of the Margarita, cosmopolitan Ensenada, is next and that will lead us to top of the peninsula where you can explore Tijuana.
