From Cancún you’ll swing by Isla Holbox for a cool dip in the Caribbean to snorkel among the whale sharks (don’t worry – they eat plankton!) before heading inland through the charming colonial town of Valladolid on your way to the world-famous pyramids of Chichen Itza.
After that it’s the exotic murals and Moorish towers of Merida, a great place for dining and shopping as well as for day trips to explore the stunning Maya ruins of Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc, hunt for mammoth bones in the 7,000-year-old caves of Loltún, swim in the secluded cenotes of Cuzamá, or flock with the flamingos in the serene coastal village of Celestun. Further down the gulf coast you’ll visit the historic town of Campeche before plunging again into the ancient past of Chiapas with a visit to the stunning temples of Palenque, nestled at the foot of the emerald Tumbalá mountains, and the jungle-shrouded Acropolis at Yaxchilán.
Next you’ll ascend to the mystical highland city of San Cristóbal de las Casas, where Maya traditions still live and breathe in the surrounding villages. Striking out south through the Yucatán you’ll encounter some of the most intriguing and well-hidden wonders of the ancient world: the Rio Bec ruins deep in the incredible Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. Emerging from the jungle you’ll be back on the coast, where diving, kayaking, bird watching and more await you in the sublime Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
Beyond that awaits Tulum, a picturesque, 16th-century walled city overlooking some of Mexico’s best beaches. The final leg of your journey takes you along the “Mayan Riviera” with lots to see and do along the way, like climbing the ancient Maya pyramid at the Cobá Ruins or swimming the underwater caverns of Cenote Dos Ojos, before wrapping up your adventure in the hip Caribbean hotspot of Playa del Carmen near Cancún.
