Monte Alban is one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica. Its ruins are located in the southern part of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico within the municipality of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan. Oaxaca City, the state capital, is approximately 6 miles east of Monte Alban. The ancient city had been the political and economic center for almost a thousand years. Founded about 500 B.C. it dominated much of Oaxacan highlands until it lost its power and was abandoned around 500 A.D.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is located in the eastern part of the state of Yucatan, Mexico. It is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico with more than a million visitors a year. The name meansat the mouth of the well of Itza.It was one of the largest of the ancient Mayan cities. Its ruins are maintained by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History. El Castillo Pyramid dominates the site but there are hundreds of stone buildings and causeways to explore including the Temple of Warriors with its beautiful columns.

Mexico City is located in the Valley of Mexico at the center of Mexico. It is the capital and most important city in Mexico. It serves as the seat of all federal powers. Not only is it the largest city in Mexico but with the definition of Greater Mexico by its population is over 21 million making it the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere. In the southern borough of Xochimilco are the floating gardens part of the UNESCO UNESCOs verdensarvliste. Other famous landmarks include the Plaza de la Constitucion with the Metropolitan Catherdral, National Palace and the ancient Aztec temple ruins Templo Mayor. With 160 museums, over 100 art galleries, 30 concert halls and many theatres, Mexico City has the world’s greatest concentration of cultural centers.
